Canadians and Americans do many things on their vacations. Some visit relatives, others travel, go camping, go to the beach, go to a cottage, relax, or even get caught up on jobs around the house. It is expensive to pay someone to do household maintenance, so many people do such things as painting, wallpapering, washing windows, building things (like desks) and fixing things around the house.

Lots of kids work to earn money during the holidays or volunteer to work to gain some work experience.
