WILL / GOING TO (Basic)

Use “will” when: 
·      You decide to do something at the time of speaking.
·      You are predicting the future saying what you THINK will happen.

Use  “going” to when: 
·      You have already DECIDED to do something and you are talking about previous plans.
·     You are predicting the future by using present evidence (i.e. the situation now makes you BELIEVE that   
  something is going to happen).


1. Fill in the blanks with “will” or are / is /are “going to”:

(A)   You are at a car rental office, talking to the car rental agent. You planned to rent a   
         compact when you arrive at your destination, but he is trying to convince you to rent
          a van.
         You say: “Ok, we ___________________________ rent a van.”

(B)  Two days later you write a letter to your friends:
       Lucy and I have already decided: “We ______________ rent a van when we get there.”

(C)  Someone asks you about the weather in your city.
      “It is hot now but I think it _______________________________ rain later.”

2. Read and then practice the following dialogue:
    
   Norma:    Are you going to rent a car?

   Agent:    What kind of car do you want?
   John:       I would like something like a Honda Civic please.
   Agent:    How long do you want it for?
   John:      A week.
   Agent:    We have a Toyota….
   John :     What model is it?
   Agent:    It’s a Corolla.
   John:      How much does it cost?
   Agent:    It’s $70.00 per day.
   John:      Does it include unlimited mileage?
   Agent:    It includes insurance, tax and unlimited mileage
   John:      That’s great. I’ll take it.
   Agent:    Can you fill in this form please.

       (Reason: Decision already taken. Probably has already paid for the rented van).

(C)  Someone asks you about the weather in your city.
      “It is hot now but I think it will rain later.” (Reason: not sure if it will rain or not).

(D)  Someone asks you about the weather in your city.
      “It is cloudy and windy. I am sure it is going to rain later.” (Reason: Certain).
