When the collision  with the iceberg happened at 11:40 p.m. Beesely was reading in his cabin. He went up on deck to see what was happening. The Captain and crew were preparing to abandon the ship. They were putting a group of women and children into a lifeboat but there weren’t enough of them to fill it completely. One of the officers turned to Beesley and told him to get in. Two hours later he and other people in his boat watched helplessely when the TitanIc finally sank and they listened to the desperate shouts of more than 1,500 people who were drowning in the freezing water.
Beesley and the other Titanic survivors were rescued by the "Carpathia" and taken to New York. Later, when he was safely back in England, he wrote a best-selling book, The Loss of the Titanic, which described his experiencies and called for better safety regulations. In the book he describes how angry he felt when he heard that the Titanic had in fact received several warnings of icebergs from other ships but hadn’t slowed down.
